As we begin to explore the meaning of Student Engagement it is very clear that research places teachers at the core of successful student engagement. While I appreciate this is fairly obvious, it magnifies the responsibility on the part of the educator to really create the learning environment that elicits the most from the learner. In situations where the instructor is approachable, sensitive to student needs, and well prepared, students tend to be more engaged. That is, they tend to be committed to work hard and get more out of the lesson, and even more willing to express an opinion (Zepke& Leach, 2010).
In a YouTube video Jacob Clifford discusses a number of reasons why student disengage from learning and offers several excellent interventions to promote engagement. The 2 interventions that stood out for me are:
The need to know your students and establish connections
The need to connect learning in ways that inspire kids to learn more and strive for greatness
